Donald H. Rumsfeld, born 1932 in Evanston, Illinois (U.S.A.), serves as the 21st Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush since January 20, 2001. He is the oldest person to have held that position, and was also the youngest when he served as the 13th Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford. The former Navy pilot’s posts during his political career include White House Chief of Staff, U.S. Ambassador to NATO and U.S. Congressman. As a businessman Mr. Rumsfeld was chief executive officer of two Fortune 500 companies and held various other positions. Before returning for his second tour as Secretary of Defense, Mr. Rumsfeld chaired the bipartisan U.S. Ballistic Missile Threat Commission (also know as “Rumsfeld Commission”), in 1998, and the U.S. Commission to Assess National Security Space Management and Organization, in 2000. Mr. Rumsfeld attended Princeton University.
